Officers of the SS and Waffen-SS Vol. B:1

In this book, you will find all officers of the SS and the Waffen-SS. As source material, we have used all existing original personnel files preserved at NARA (USA) and the Bundesarchiv in Berlin-Lichterfelde. A work of this scope has not previously been undertaken, and we have likely succeeded in identifying all officers whose records can be located.

The book provides biographical information on every officer, including their dates and places of birth, the units in which they served and during which periods, as well as the political and military awards they received. A selected number of officers are presented with more detailed biographies. Whenever available, a photograph has been included, and where the information exists, we have also noted the officer’s date of death.

In addition to the files mentioned above, we have consulted a wide range of archives in order to gather as much information as possible on each individual.

This volume is the second in the series and covers officers with family names beginning with B—specifically, those from Baab to Bernges. In total, 2,107 officers are included. The organization they belonged to evokes both fascination and revulsion; who were these men, and what roles did they play? Did they all serve in concentration camps, or do their histories reveal a wider range of experiences?

This book is an essential resource for anyone researching the history of the SS and/or the Waffen-SS, as well as for readers simply seeking to understand more about this complex and troubling chapter of history.
